Ilala |
These baskets are intricately hand-woven with strips of Ilala Palm by women from the Binga region. They were traditionally used to store grain and maize. The darker colour of the weave is produced by running a strip of the weave through a mud and dye mixture. Sizes range from 25cm to 80cm in diameter. Prices from £5 to £15 |

Sisal |
Sisal string is dyed and then spun by hand. The technique is to twist the fibre with one hand whilst rolling fibre accross the knee to spin it - rather like rubbing your stomach with one hand and patting your head with the other!!!
